Prayer of Surrender

Posted on 03. Sep, 2008 by Josh Agerton in Formation

Just wanted to drop in this prayer.  I shared it in a sermon a few weeks back and have had several folks ask about it.  It’s one that John Wesley first prayed in 1780 with his early Methodist preachers.  This became part of thier annual covenant service they would do at the beginning of each year to re-commit their lives in service to Christ.  We have so much to learn from this.  This version is a little more contemporary but you can find it in it’s original text here.

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your hope and service.
And now God, my Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
you are mine, and I am yours.
So be it.  Amen.

Reminds me of Mother Theresa’s prayers I have hanging in my office…
    I will refuse you nothing.
    I will endure hardships.
When I don’t feel your presence I will still be faithful.
I will seek to love you as you have never been loved before.

Good stuff man. Thanks for the words.

    Blessings,
    Rudy
